A tired deck above Bear Lake, rebuilt for the view
The old wood deck on this lakeview home had done its time. We took it down to the structure, rebuilt what needed rebuilding, and put on a composite deck with a black metal railing that finally lets the lake be the view.

What we did, and why it matters
Wood decks at Bear Lake have a hard life. Snow sits on them for months, then the summer sun bakes them, and this one had the soft boards and the wobbly railing to show for it. The owners wanted two things: a deck they would not have to sand and stain every other year, and a clear view of the water from the chairs.
We took the old decking and railing off first and went over the structure underneath before deciding anything. Anything questionable was replaced, the ledger connection to the house was checked and fastened correctly, and the framing was confirmed for the snow load it actually carries up there. That inspection is the whole reason a deck remodel lasts, and it is the step that gets skipped when someone just lays new boards over old joists.
The new surface is composite decking, with a black metal railing in place of the old wood wall. Thin pickets, code height, and nothing to stain. Stand at the door now and the lake is the first thing you see.
The owners were not on site for most of the work, which is common at the lake. We sent photos as each stage finished, called before any decision that affected cost, and left the place clean. Drag the slider below to see the before and after from the same spot.
